In the aftermath of the 2025 Canadia federal election, 4 ridings will be undergoing post-election recounts. 3 of these ridings will be undergoing automatic recounts due to the leading nominee only winning with less than 0.1 of the overall vote in the riding. 2 of those 3 ridings, Milton East – Halton Hills South in Ontario and Terra Nova – The Peninsula in Newfoundland and Labrador, are currently led by Liberal candidates. The third riding, Terrebonne in Quebec, is led by a Bloc Québécois candidate.
The fourth riding, Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore in Ontario, is undergoing a court ordered recount as requested by former incumbent and Liberal candidate Irek Kusmierczyk, who according to the results of the election lost to the Conservative candidate by only 100 votes.
These recounts can have a profound effect on the makeup of the new Parliament as the Liberals only need to win 3 out of 4 ridings in order to have a majority government, although a very narrow one at that. In turn the results of these recounts can have effects on ongoing political polarization and discourse between supporters of Canada’s two major brokerage parties, with some opposition supporters indicating that they may refuse to accept the validity of the results provided by the non-partisan recount system.
