The 51st G7 summit concluded in Alberta on June 17, 2025. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was a controversial invitee to the meeting. India has been accused of committing espionage and assassinations on Canadian soil, and Canadian intelligence claims that India still poses a security threat. Other countries such as China, Russia, Iran and Pakistan were also identified as security threats in CSIS’s annual report.

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s invitation to Modi has been criticized by human-rights activists and Sikh organizations, with demonstrations persisting throughout the summit. Carney has declined to respond to criticism or to state whether he discussed India’s alleged espionage activity on Canadian soil in his private meeting with Modi.

Carney’s cabinet is dedicated with diversifying trade away from the US towards other partners such as China, India, Europe and the UK.

At the end of the summit, the G7 leaders issued a joint statement condemning all forms of state-sponsored transnational repression, including targeted assassinations. No state was mentioned specifically.
