At the time of writing, the Liberal Party of Canada is expected to win a fourth consecutive term even amidst notable Conservative gains. Although whether new parliament will be led by a minority or majority government is still on the table.

Come may, an individual who will not be in parliament will be NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, who lost his seat to Liberal candidate and electoral newcomer Wade Chang. Jagmeet Singh almost immediately held a press conference congratulating Prime Minister Mark Carney before announcing that he will step down down as party leader.

Jagmeet Singh’s tenure as party leader has come under sharp criticism as lacking political teeth, especially for him not ending the confidence and supply agreement with the Liberals last autumn when his own party was soaring in the polls. Now analysts have contributed consolidation of the left leaning vote, NDP supporters voting Liberal, as a key factor in the Liberal victory as the decline in Conservative Party polling was rather negligible.
