11 people, aged 5 to 65, were killed, and more than two dozen others injured when a man drove an SUV into a crowd of people celebrating the Lapu Lapu Day festival at 8:14 p.m. yesterday, near Fraser Street on East 43rd Avenue.
A 30-year-old Vancouver man was arrested at the scene by Vancouver Police after bystanders and witnesses intervened to detain him.
This afternoon, the BC Prosecution Service charged Kai-Ji Adam Lo, aged 30, with 8 counts of murder with the possibility of additional charges in the future. The accused refused to seek out bail. The accused was previously known to police and has been described as having a history of mental health issues. The VPD is not investigating the attack as an act of terrorism.
The attack at the Lapu Lapu Block Party has caused domestic and international outcry, with politicians and public figures expressing their condolences and solitary with the Vancouver and Filipino communities. Attorney General of British Columbia, Nikki Sharma, pictured above, attended a vigil at St Mary the Virgin South Hill Church this morning.
