On Friday Sep 5th, Prime Minister Carney announced that when Parliament reconvenes his party will introduce legislation that will tighten Canada’s bail system. The proposal aims to make it harder for those accused of serious crimes to be released. Carney also stated that his government was committed to fixing the criminal code, and is interested in advancing stricter punishments and consecutive sentences.
The legislation is a response to a series of highly publicized violent crimes, particularly in the Ontario, including home invasions and sexual assaults. The Liberal Government is yet to comment on changing the current state of self-defence laws in the country.
Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre has criticized the government for not acting fast enough. Critics of the Liberals also pointed out that Carney only shifted towards criminal reform after nationwide outcry on years of inaction under his predecessor Trudeau.
