Punjabi Singer Found Dead in Punjab Days After Alleged Abduction; Main Suspect Flees to Canada

A 29-year-old Punjabi singer who was allegedly abducted at gunpoint earlier this month was found dead in a canal in Punjab’s Ludhiana district on Monday, police said.

The victim, identified as Inder Kaur, also known as Yashinder Kaur, had been missing since May 13 after leaving her home in Ludhiana’s Jamalpur area to buy groceries, according to her family.

Police said her body was recovered from the Neelon canal and sent to the Civil Hospital in Samrala for a post-mortem examination.

Family members alleged that a man from Moga district had been pressuring the her  to marry him. They said she refused after learning he was already married and had children.

According to police and the family, the accused — identified as Sukhwinder Singh, also known as “Sukha” — allegedly abducted Kaur at gunpoint with the help of his accomplices on the evening of May 13.

Her brother, Jotinder Singh, told police that Kaur left home around 6:30 p.m. in her white Ford Figo car but never returned. The family began searching for her and later learned of her association with Sukhwinder Singh through social media.

Investigators said the two had become acquainted on Instagram about three years ago. Relations between them reportedly deteriorated after Kaur discovered the suspect was married.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Inderjit Singh said authorities had already been searching the canal after Kaur’s vehicle was recovered there several days ago. Divers were deployed to locate the body, which was identified by relatives after it was found Monday morning.

“In the preliminary investigation, it has emerged that the accused shot the woman dead before dumping her body and vehicle into the canal,” the officer said.

Police said two suspects have already been arrested in connection with the case, while the main accused is believed to have fled to Canada. An investigation is ongoing.
