Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib, SGPC President meet governor, discuss anti-sacrilege act

The acting jathedar of Akal Takht and the president of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) met Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria on Wednesday to raise objections to provisions in the Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026.

Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj and SGPC president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami met the governor at Gurdwara Sri Manji Sahib Patshahi Dasvin, where Kataria had arrived to pay obeisance.

During the nearly 20-minute meeting, the Sikh leaders discussed concerns over clauses included in the amendment legislation recently passed by the Punjab government. Gargajj and Dhami told the governor that several provisions in the law were objectionable and provided him with details of the concerns raised by Sikh institutions.

Gargajj also handed Kataria a letter along with a copy of the objections that the Akal Takht had formally submitted to the Punjab government.

According to Sikh leaders present at the meeting, the governor assured them that efforts would be made to resolve the matter.

Dhami welcomed Kataria at the gurdwara complex and presented him with a siropa, a traditional Sikh robe of honour, at the office of the gurdwara manager.
