Officials in Punjab recover $40,000 at Intl' Airport in Amritsar

Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized US$40,000 in undeclared foreign currency from a woman from Uzbekistan at Sri Guru Ramdas  International Airport in Amritsar, authorities said Thursday.

The seizure was made by officers of the DRI’s Amritsar regional unit following what officials described as specific intelligence inputs.

According to authorities, the woman was preparing to board Air India Express flight from Amritsar to Dubai when officials became suspicious and conducted a detailed search of her baggage.

During the inspection, officers allegedly recovered US$40,000 concealed inside the luggage.

Officials said the seized currency is valued at approximately 3.87 million Indian rupees in the local market.

The DRI said the amount exceeded the permissible limit set by the Reserve Bank of India and was not declared to customs authorities.

The foreign currency was confiscated under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962, and further investigation into the case is underway, officials said.
