Clashes, Tear Gas Reported at Student-Led Protests in New Delhi

Tensions escalated in the Indian capital Wednesday night as fresh clashes broke out between student demonstrators and Delhi Police at the Jantar Mantar protest site.

Police deployed tear gas after alleging that protesters affiliated with the youth movement Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) threw stones at officers. Authorities said at least six police personnel, including two Assistant Commissioners of Police, were injured during the night's unrest.

Videos circulating online show police wielding batons against demonstrators, while some protesters were seen holding wooden sticks. The violence follows similar clashes earlier in the week during a march toward Parliament regarding alleged irregularities in national competitive examinations.

Speaking at the protest site, CJP spokesperson Saurav Das said the organization remains open to talks with the government regarding the exam disputes but insisted any meeting take place at a neutral venue rather than a minister's home. CJP also demanded assurances that no peaceful demonstrators face legal action or fresh charges.

Demonstrations over the exam scandal have since spread to several major cities across India, including Mumbai, Jaipur, and Goa.
