CJP Accuses Govt of Delaying Withdrawal of FIRs Against Student Protesters
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) accused the central government on Tuesday of reneging on its assurances regarding the withdrawal of FIRs and compensation for student protesters.
Speaking outside the Supreme Court, CJP spokesperson Saurav Das stated that during a hearing on the July 20 Jantar Mantar violence, the court requested three times that the government submit a list of registered FIRs to consider quashing them under Article 142. The party urged the government to immediately furnish the list.
Petitioners' counsel Vrinda Grover called on the apex court to invoke Article 142 to quash all protest-related FIRs nationwide. CJP legal head Ratna Singh noted that despite sharing a lawyer-verified draft following an Aug. 2 meeting, the government has failed to respond. Das further requested CJP representation on any probe panel examining police misconduct.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court announced it will form a high-powered committee—including retired judges, a former DGP, and an ex-CBI director—to investigate allegations of police excesses, violence against officers, and sexual assault and online harassment of female protesters.
