Nepal floods: Death toll rises to 579

Nepalese authorities say at least 579 bodies have been recovered across eight districts following devastating flash floods, while nearly 2,000 people remain missing.

Police confirmed the highest casualties in Chitwan district, where 233 bodies were retrieved, along with 154 in Nawalpur East, 46 in Gorkha, and 40 in Dhading. Bodies were also recovered in Nuwakot (37), Tanahun (30), Nawalparasi West (27), and Rasuwa (12). Across the border, Chinese officials reported five deaths in Tibet’s Gyirong County.

At least 1,924 people remain unaccounted for after heavy flooding struck Rasuwa and neighboring districts Wednesday. The missing include 517 foreign tourists, 127 local commuters, and 86 security personnel.

Rescue teams have pulled 1,545 injured or stranded people from the affected areas so far, with 84 currently receiving treatment in Kathmandu hospitals as families anxiously search for their loved ones.

Emergency operations are proceeding with extreme caution due to the threat of secondary flooding triggered by rising water levels in a barrier lake formed by a glacier collapse along the Tibet border.
