Man Arrested for Sacrilege at Golden Temple Complex

Police in Amritsar have arrested a local man following an alleged act of sacrilege inside the Golden Temple complex.

The suspect, identified as Mandeep Singh of the Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar neighborhood, was taken into custody after investigators reviewed CCTV security footage from the site.

According to authorities, the incident occurred near the Sri Akal Takht Sahib within the complex. A female devotee visiting with her family—who also resides in Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar—notified shrine authorities after discovering that torn pages (angs) of a Gutka Sahib (a Sikh prayer book) had been covertly tied to her outfit.

She immediately alerted administrators from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the body responsible for managing the historical Sikh shrine. SGPC staff member Simranjit Singh, stationed in the complex's inner courtyard (parikrama), subsequently lodged an official complaint with local law enforcement.

Surinder Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police, confirmed the arrest and noted that investigators are probing how and where the sacred pages were torn, as well as the suspect's underlying motive. Major Singh, General Manager of the Golden Temple, added that police questioning remains ongoing.
