Growing Participation and Community Impact Drive 'RunSurreyRun’s' Success

The sixth annual RunSurreyRun took over Downtown Surrey on Saturday, September 12, celebrating record participation for the third consecutive year and another milestone in the event’s continued growth.

More than 1,100 participants registered across the 5K, 10K, 1K Kids Run and Virtual Race. 460 runners completed the 5K, 420 finished the 10K and 98 young runners crossed the Kids Run finish line, with another 23 participating virtually.

“The growth is exciting, but what matters most is seeing more people getting active and connecting through running,” said Gurjinder Bhurji, Founder and Race Director of RunSurreyRun. “We want race day to inspire people to keep moving all year long.”

There was plenty of speed on the streets as well. Local elite runner Louis Maruk of the Vancouver Falcons, a three-time RunSurreyRun champion, set a new 10K course record with a time of 31:01 on a freshly World Athletics-certified course. The 5K, which was Race No. 7 in the Lower Mainland Road Race Series, also featured a highly competitive field of local elite runners. For the full results, visit Startline Timing.

Beyond the running/walking, RunSurreyRun delivered a complete community experience. Participants encountered ten activations along the course, while Holland Park came alive with more than twenty-five sponsor, charity, family, health and wellness activations.

RunSurreyRun partnered with eight charities and non-profits, with teams and participants raising $4,608.23 for the organizations. Leftover food from the event was donated to Surrey Food Bank and Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen and there was fifty plus volunteers that came out to help.

New in 2026, was a run club/crew and community ambassador initiative, connecting RunSurreyRun with local running groups to encourage year-round movement, active living and to build community.

With three consecutive years of record participation, organizers are already looking ahead to 2027 and planning for sustainable growth while continuing to improve the participant and community experience.

“We’re building something that goes beyond one day,” Bhurji said. “It’s about creating a healthier, more active and connected Surrey.”

And the Surrey community is clearly ready to run. To learn more about RunSurreyRun, visit www.runsurreyrun.com
