Fraud continues to impact the Richmond community

Fraud continues to impact the Richmond community, with scammers using increasingly sophisticated tactics to target individuals and businesses. Police continue to receive reports of a variety of scams, including investment, impersonation, online marketplace, and currency exchange frauds. These incidents serve as a reminder that anyone can become a target and that vigilance remains one of the most effective tools in preventing victimization.

"Fraudsters rely on urgency and trust. Taking a moment to verify before you send money can protect you from becoming a victim,” says Corporal Denise Kam of the Richmond RCMP Economic Crime Unit. “Currency exchange fraud is one of many schemes used by fraudsters to exploit trust and create a false sense of urgency. Understanding how these scams work is the first step in protecting yourself.”

Protect Yourself from Currency Exchange Scams

Fraudsters are increasingly targeting individuals seeking currency exchange services by offering attractive exchange rates through social media, online marketplaces, messaging apps, and unofficial money exchange services. Victims are often persuaded to send money overseas, only to discover that the promised Canadian funds never arrive or they receive counterfeit or fraudulent cheques that later bounce.

Common Red Flags

  • Exchange rates that appear significantly better than those offered by legitimate financial institutions.
  • Requests to transfer funds before receiving any form of currency.
  • Transactions arranged through social media platforms or messaging applications.
  • Pressure to act quickly to secure a "limited-time" rate.
  • Individuals unwilling or unable to provide identification or conduct the transaction through a reputable financial institution.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Use only reputable banks, credit unions, or licensed currency exchange businesses.
  • Verify the legitimacy of any exchange service before sending money.
  • Avoid sending funds to unknown individuals or businesses.
  • Be cautious of unsolicited offers and deals that seem too good to be true.
  • Report suspicious activity to local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
