Carson wins Nobel Prize in Literature; PM praises ‘extraordinary achievement’

Prime Minister Mark Carney congratulated Canadian poet, essayist, and classicist Anne Carson on Thursday following her recognition as the recipient of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature.

Carson, celebrated internationally for her unique style blending ancient classics with modern literature, was honoured with one of the world's highest literary distinctions.

In a statement released Thursday, the prime minister praised Carson's distinct voice and global influence, noting her ability to bridge ancient history and contemporary writing.

"A poet, essayist, translator, and classicist, Carson has reimagined the classics with wit, imagination, and a style entirely her own," the prime minister said. "She has brought ancient stories to new audiences and transformed the way we think about literature."

Carson’s work has previously earned her major national and international distinctions, including two Griffin Poetry Prizes and an appointment as a Member of the Order of Canada.

"Drawing on ancient traditions with bold imagination and originality, her work has inspired writers and captivated readers around the world," Carney said. "This is an extraordinary achievement for Carson, and a proud moment for Canada."
