Burnaby RCMP investigating series of vase thefts from gravesites, set up tip line
Burnaby RCMP is investigating a series of thefts involving bronze gravesite vases from local cemeteries, potentially representing hundreds of thousands of dollars of loss. The vases sit directly on top of the grave marker, to allow people to leave flowers for their loved ones.
Over the past several months, it is believed that several hundred bronze gravesite vases have been stolen from local cemeteries. Because these thefts are typically only discovered when loved ones visit the site, the exact number of stolen items is unknown.
While some of these vases have a monetary value exceeding $1,000, the loss extends far beyond the financial cost.
“The monetary value, while high, pales in comparison to the sentimental value these items hold for grieving families,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj with the Burnaby RCMP. “Stealing from a final resting place is a disgusting act that causes significant emotional distress to those already dealing with loss. We are committed to identifying those responsible.”
Burnaby RCMP has set up a dedicated phone line and email address and are asking anyone with information to call or email investigators directly.
