Jhota murder: Punjab government reaches consensus with family
Representatives of the Punjab government and an action committee demanding justice for activist Parvinder Singh Jhota reached a consensus on several key demands after a five-hour meeting on the 23rd day of an ongoing protest.
Under the agreement, the state government has assured the release of arrested leaders, including Lakha Sidhana. Authorities have committed to approving a trauma center in Khyala Kalan named in Jhota’s honor within a week, conducting a time-bound inquiry into the role of involved officials, and providing Jhota’s family with $320,000 CAD (20 million INR) in compensation along with a government job. The government also agreed to set up a memorial statue for Jhota and extend financial aid and employment support to the family of Daljit Singh Bhamme.
Protest leaders stated that Jhota’s autopsy and final rites will take place only after all detained leaders are released. Consequently, a planned protest march to besiege the Chief Minister’s residence on Nov. 5 has been postponed.
