Peel police warns people of fraud calls

Peel Regional Police are warning the public about an ongoing telephone scam involving individuals impersonating Peel Police officers.

Investigators have learned that fraudsters are using spoofing technology to make calls appear as though they are originating from the Peel Regional Police non-emergency phone number, 905-453-3311.

During these incidents, callers may falsely identify themselves as members of Peel Regional Police and provide fake names and badge numbers in an attempt to appear legitimate. The callers may also claim there is an active police investigation involving the victim’s phone number or allege the victim is connected to an ongoing fraud or criminal investigation.

The caller may attempt to obtain personal, banking, or financial information from unsuspecting individuals. Peel Regional Police are reminding the public not to rely solely on caller ID, as phone numbers can easily be manipulated through technology.

If you receive a suspicious or potentially fraudulent call, police encourage the public to follow these safety tips:

  • Do not provide personal, banking, or financial information over the phone
  • Hang up immediately and block the phone number, if possible
  • Do not feel pressured to remain on the call or respond to threats or demands
  • Contact Peel Regional Police directly at 905-453-3311 to verify the legitimacy of the call or report the incident
  • Share fraud prevention information with family and friends to help protect the community
