PM signs deal with Smith to strengthen energy market

The Federal government signed a landmark implementation agreement with Alberta to expand  energy exports, strengthening carbon markets, and accelerating investment in clean electricity infrastructure.

Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith Friday announced the deal , describing it as a major step toward building a more competitive and sustainable Canadian economy.

Under the agreement, Alberta and Ottawa will gradually raise the industrial carbon price to $140 per tonne by 2040, while introducing tighter emissions standards and carbon contracts for difference to encourage investment in emissions-reduction projects.

The two governments also committed to doubling Alberta’s electricity grid capacity by 2050 through expanded nuclear, wind, solar, geothermal, and lower-carbon energy generation. A joint electricity working group will help guide grid modernization and support growing demand from AI and data centre projects.
