Lake Country RCMP reminds public of dangers of impaired driving
Lake Country RCMP are reminding the public of the dangers of impaired driving following a head-on collision on May 26.
On May 26, at approximately 7:15 p.m., Lake Country RCMP responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision on Okanagan Centre Road West near Carrs Landing Road.
Upon arrival, officers determined that a passenger vehicle failed to navigate a sharp curve on Okanagan Centre Road West, crossed into the oncoming lane, and collided head-on with an SUV. Both vehicles sustained significant damage and were not drivable.
The driver of the suspect vehicle was observed leaving the scene on foot with injuries consistent with airbag deployment. Police located the driver a short distance away. While the individual did not appear to be seriously injured, officers noted signs of recent alcohol consumption.
An impaired driving investigation was initiated. The driver provided breath samples at the roadside, which confirmed alcohol impairment. As a result, the driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
The driver of the SUV was not injured. Witnesses at the scene provided immediate assistance and valuable information to police.
“This was an extremely dangerous situation that could have resulted in far more serious consequences,” says Cpl. Ryder Birtwistle of the Lake Country RCMP. “We continue to target impaired and dangerous driving, but it is concerning to see incidents like this putting the public at risk.”
Lake Country RCMP would like to thank the witnesses who assisted both by calling for help and providing critical information, including the direction of travel of the suspect. Their actions helped ensure a timely response and contributed to holding the driver accountable. S/Sgt. Collins Lake Country Detachment Commander
