Removal of Daljeet's movie raise questions
'Satluj' , the much awaited biopic of Human Rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra was removed from an OTT platform Zee5, two days after it was released. The movie stirred a debate in India and abroad and the questions are raised about the removal of the movie which also talks about the alleged human rights abuse in Punjab during the militancy.
The movie is being downloaded from many platforms, including the Whats App as the PDF files were circulated widely. The movie, which has a duration of around two hours, revolves around the life of Khalra, who posed serious questions on the way the alleged extrajudicial killings were carried out in Punjab.
Born in 1952 in Khalra village, Jawant Singh worked in a bank in Amritsar before starting compiling the records of missing people. He started compiling the list of people who were allegedly killed or cremated in Majha area and eventually claimed to discover that 25000 such killings were carried out.
Khalra was allegedly killed in Chabal Kalan in 1995.
'Satluj', the movie which is directed by Honey Trehan highlights the circumstances around Khalra's death.
It was shown in the film that Khalra was kidnapped and then killed by Punjab police. A detailed inquiry conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), found that 2,097 were cremated illegally in Tarn Taran district alone.
The movie is awaiting release for around four years. The Censor Board of Film Certification, India's regulatory body who decides about the content, was demanding cuts in the film.
The film was first named as 'Punjab 95', highlighting the year in which Khalra was allegedly killed.
The change of the title was among the first demands by the censor board. It was also demanded that the name of Punjab police should also changed as it was depicting the state police in a bad light, then were were names of some politicians. The assasination of former Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Beant Singh is also shown in the movie.
Beant Singh was assasinated in 1995 outside the Punjab Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh where a suicide bomber blew him up.
