Punjab Rights Activist's Family Questions Release of Ex-Police Officer Convicted in Khalra Killing

The family of  Sheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh has raised questions over the release on bail of former Punjab police officer Jaspal Singh, who is serving a life sentence for the abduction and murder of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra.

The family's lawyer, Sarabjot Singh Cheema, has written to Punjab's prisons department, the advocate general and the chief minister's office seeking records related to Singh's release. He argues Singh should have remained in custody because he was also serving a separate five-year sentence in the 1989 abduction case of Kuljit Singh Dhatt, a relative of Bhagat Singh, who disappeared after being taken into police custody and has never been found.

Singh was granted bail in the Khalra case in May 2023 while his application for remission of the life sentence remained pending. Cheema contends that under a 2016 Supreme Court ruling, separate sentences imposed in different cases cannot automatically run concurrently unless ordered by a court.
