Arpan Khanna, Conservative Shadow Minister for Justice & Attorney General of Canada, and Frank Caputo, Conservative Shadow Minister for Public Safety, released the following statement on the latest crime statistics:

“With the release of the 2025 StatsCan figures, Canadians learned that total incidents of violent crime are up again from 2024, having risen by a whopping 57 per cent since the Liberals took power. This was a result of the reckless Liberal policies that have unleashed chaos and disorder onto our once-safe streets. 

“Prime Minister Mark Carney pitched himself as a radical change. But so far, his government has weakened the Criminal Code with the ‘Get Out Of Jail Free’ card in their flagship crime legislation C-16: empowering judges to ignore almost all mandatory minimum sentences including for extortion with a firearm, human trafficking and aggravated sexual assault with a gun.

“Meanwhile, soft-on-crime laws like C-5 and C-75 remain on the books and with them Liberal bail: the ‘Principle of Restraint’ that makes it easier for criminals to get released back onto the street.

“Yet, even with gun crime up by more than double since 2015, the Liberals are still going after tested and licensed hunters, farmers and sport shooters with their costly gun grab.

“Conservatives have been putting forward solutions. That includes the Jail Not Bail Act, which would have ended Liberal bail, but was unfortunately voted down by the government. We also passed C-225, ‘Bailey’s Law’, to protect victims of intimate partner violence and hold repeat offenders to account.

“We will always fight for a safe and secure Canada that puts law-abiding citizens first. That means reversing reckless Liberal legislation, repealing the ‘Principle of Restraint’ and strengthening bail laws to restore safe streets to our communities.”
