Pedestrian dies in collision with motor vehicle

Nanaimo RCMP is investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred on Departure Bay Road near Argyle Street. The incident occurred just before 5 PM on Thursday July 23.

Police, Fire crews and BCEHS responded. The preliminary investigation indicated the pedestrian was struck while standing next to his vehicle which was parked off the road. For unknown reasons, the SUV left the roadway and struck the pedestrian. Both the driver and victim were males in their late 70s. The victim was transported for medical treatment with serious life-threatening injuries. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he later succumbed to his injuries.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

An RCMP Collision Reconstructionist attended the scene. Departure Bay Road was temporarily closed while investigators gathered evidence.

Road conditions were dry and in good condition at the time of the collision. Based on the preliminary investigation, there is no indication that alcohol, drugs, or speed were factors in the crash. The police investigation is ongoing.

“This is a tragic incident that has resulted in the loss of a life and has deeply affected everyone involved,” said Inspector Donovan Tait, Operations Officer for the Nanaimo RCMP. “Investigators are continuing to examine all aspects of the collision to determine exactly what occurred.”

The Nanaimo RCMP General Investigation Section has assumed conduct of the file.
