Kelowna RCMP warning public about increase in distraction thefts

The Kelowna RCMP  is warning residents to remain vigilant following an increase in reports of distraction thefts and fake gold scams occurring throughout the community.

Distraction thefts involve suspects using conversation, deception, emotional manipulation, and physical contact to steal valuables, often jewellery, from unsuspecting victims. While anyone can be targeted, seniors are frequently victimized. These thefts can occur in a matter of seconds, often before the victim realizes an item has been stolen.

Police have also seen incidents where suspects approach individuals in public places, including parking lots, gas stations, and other busy areas, claiming to be in financial distress and in urgent need of money. Victims may be offered jewellery as collateral or payment, or at a drastically reduced price, only to discover later that the items are fake.

"These crimes often rely on surprise, distraction, and emotional pressure to take advantage of unsuspecting victims," said Corporal Steven Lang, Kelowna RCMP Media Relations Officer. "Police encourage residents to be cautious when approached by strangers, especially those attempting to enter your personal space, offer gifts, or request financial assistance."
