BC Lions Fall to Calgary, but Playoff Picture Is Set for a Halloween Showdown at BC Place
Written by Harp Pandher
On Saturday afternoon, the BC Lions took on the Calgary Stampeders in Week 20 of the CFL season, marking the Lions’ final road game of the regular season. A week earlier, the Lions had clinched a playoff berth with a victory over the Ottawa Redblacks at home. Then, on Friday night, the Edmonton Elks defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, officially locking the Lions into second place in the West Division.
That means the Lions will host the West Semi-Final on Saturday, October 31, at 1:30 p.m. at BC Place. And with Halloween falling on game day, there is already plenty of excitement building for what promises to be an electric atmosphere.
For Calgary, however, Saturday’s matchup carried much greater urgency. The Stampeders needed a victory to keep their playoff hopes alive, with Winnipeg sitting just ahead of them in the standings. With their season on the line, Calgary had everything to play for.
The game itself was a relatively slow and uneventful affair, with plenty of questions surrounding how much the Lions’ starters would play, particularly quarterback Nathan Rourke. Would the Lions give their
key players a full workload, or would they use the opportunity to rest some of their starters ahead of the playoffs?
Rourke started the game and played the first half, putting together a decent performance. Once the second half began, however, he was on the sidelines with his helmet off, wearing his earpiece and holding a clipboard as Kaeden Salter took over at quarterback.
The game was tied 9-9 at halftime, but the Lions struggled to generate much offence after the break. Salter had difficulty moving the ball consistently, while Calgary quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. took advantage of the opportunity to lead the Stampeders’ offence. Calgary eventually pulled away, handing the Lions a 32-13 defeat.
From the Lions’ perspective, the result is not one that should cause too much concern. Their primary objective heading into the game was to get through their final road contest, manage their players and prepare for the postseason. With second place in the West already secured, the result did not change their playoff position.
For Calgary, meanwhile, the victory keeps its playoff hopes alive and adds another layer of intrigue to the final week of the regular season. The Stampeders will need the right results elsewhere, including a BC Lions victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at BC Place next week, to keep their postseason hopes alive.
Saskatchewan has also clinched a playoff berth, although the Roughriders will have to begin their playoff journey on the road. Depending on how the final standings shake out, they could travel to BC or potentially cross over to face the Toronto Argonauts.
All eyes now turn to the final regular-season game at BC Place, as the Lions welcome Winnipeg on Friday, October 23, at 7 p.m. The game will feature an Oktoberfest theme, giving fans another reason to get out to the stadium and support their team.
And for Lions fans, there is an even bigger date to circle on the calendar: Halloween afternoon, October 31, when BC hosts the West Semi-Final at 1:30 p.m.
Make sure you secure your tickets for both games and get ready for the postseason atmosphere. The tailgate plans are also starting to take shape, and the Punjabi community will be out in full force to support the BC Lions. We have something special in the works, but we are going to keep that under wraps for now.
More details will be coming next week, so stay tuned.
One thing is certain: the regular season is winding down, but the excitement is only beginning. The Lions are playoff-bound, BC Place is getting ready for a Halloween showdown, and the Punjabi community will be ready to bring the energy.
