A man allegedly discharged a handgun in Surrey’s Whalley area on Monday afternoon, first near the busy Gateway SkyTrain precinct (University Drive at 108 Avenue) and then at the Surrey Police Service (SPS) District 1 Community Police Office on King George Boulevard at 107A/107 Avenue. A suspect—described by police as “known to” them—was taken into custody after a rapid tactical response following the second incident. While Surrey Police said nobody was injured in the two incidents, this happening in the backdrop of a series of shootings in the city in recent weeks connected to extortion bids made the perception about Surrey becoming increasingly unsafe stronger.
According to SPS, the initial “shots-fired” call was logged at approximately 3:13 p.m. near Gateway Station. Officers then tracked the suspect to the front of the District 1 office, where additional shots were reportedly fired. The Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team (IERT) and the Integrated Police Dog Service (IPDS) assisted in the takedown at the station entrance. An RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit examined a bag the suspect left at the office; it was cleared as non-suspicious. Police shut down vehicle and pedestrian traffic around the area.
Sher-E-Punjab’s morning show host Jagdeep Singh visited the spot on Monday evening and reported from there live. You can find the spot report in the video file below.
The mainstream media later added on-record comments from an SPS staff sergeant noting investigators are assessing the suspect’s history (including mental-health issues) and working to establish whether shots were directed at people, officers, or fired indiscriminately. Potential charges range from firearms offences to assault or attempted homicide, pending evidence.
