Dismissed Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Rajjit Singh Hundal has surrendered to police in Patiala, ending years on the run as one of Punjab’s most high-profile fugitives in a major drug trafficking case.

The former senior police official surrendered following allegations of conspiring with drug traffickers, extortion, and protecting actual smugglers by framing innocent people in false drug cases.

Singh was dismissed from service after a high-court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) found he colluded with dismissed inspector Inderjit Singh in a widespread drug and extortion racket. He subsequently faced multiple charges, including an investigation by the Vigilance Bureau into assets disproportionate to his known income and charges by the Special Task Force for extortion and protecting drug cartels.

Singh had been evading arrest since slipping away from authorities in Mohali after his bail plea was rejected. His name was also tied to a broader drug probe led by former Enforcement Directorate official Niranjan Singh, which previously led to the dismissal of former DSP Jagdish Singh Bhola. 

The surrender comes as political pressure builds ahead of the 2027 Punjab assembly elections, where the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) faces intense scrutiny from opposition parties questioning the delayed action against high-ranking figures linked to the state's drug trade.
