Police in Amritsar district of Punjab province in India  say they have foiled a targeted killing plot after arresting members of the Keshav Shivala gang during an operation that left three suspects injured in a shootout.

Amritsar Police Commissioner Harmanbir Singh Gill said the operation began after Chheharta police station SHO Balwinder Singh set up a checkpoint based on intelligence inputs. Officers initially detained a suspect identified as Vishal and seized a .30-bore Glock pistol from his possession.

During questioning, Vishal disclosed that his accomplices were hiding in a wooded area near Thanda Road, waiting for his signal to carry out a major crime.

Police teams subsequently surrounded the area. Three additional suspects were wounded in their legs during an exchange of gunfire before being taken into custody.

An investigation into the gang's network and intended targets remains ongoing.
