WB Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee stage protest, allege tempering with ballot box
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee alleged tampering the strong rooms where the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are kept. Banerjee also led a protest by her party workers in state's capital Kolkata.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC), Banerjee's party alleged that the Election Commission of India- the body which is responsible for conducting the elections and safeguarding the EVMs, and the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) were tempering with the ballot boxes.
Senior TMC leaders, including Shashi Panja and Kunal Ghosh, led a demonstration outside Netaji Indoor Stadium, describing the situation as a “murder of democracy.”
The Election Commission rejected the allegations, stating that all strong rooms had been sealed in the presence of candidates and observers. It said that activity seen in CCTV footage was related to the sorting of postal ballots and not to sealed EVM storage areas.
