INDIA bloc calls for unity, to prepare for 2029

Leaders of India’s opposition INDIA bloc met Monday and emphasized the need for greater unity, mutual trust and coordination as they prepare to challenge the ruling government in upcoming elections.

Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged alliance partners to avoid publicly criticizing one another and called for closer engagement with social movements. Her remarks marked a notable shift toward strengthening cooperation within the opposition coalition.

Rahul Gandhi stressed that trust and solidarity among alliance members would be essential to effectively challenge the government, while Omar Abdullah described the Indian National Congress as the “glue” holding the coalition together.

Akhilesh Yadav called for reducing differences within the alliance and urged Congress to show flexibility in future seat-sharing negotiations, particularly in states where regional parties are strongest against the BJP.

Meanwhile, Tejashwi Yadav said the opposition should begin planning for the 2029 general election and maintain a sustained grassroots campaign against the ruling party.

The meeting also included participation from Uddhav Thackeray and Hemant Soren via video conference, with Thackeray proposing more frequent meetings among alliance partners.
