Canada to welcome Turkiye foreign minister, talks to focus on NATO, Russia
Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, will welcome Hakan Fidan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye, to Canada on June 25 and 26.
Building on their most recent meeting in Ankara, in March this year, the ministers will engage in discussions toward a strengthened partnership between Canada and Türkiye. They will also discuss their respective countries’ priorities and positions on a broad range of topics ahead of the upcoming NATO Summit, which will take place in Ankara on July 7 and 8.
The ministers will also exchange views on global and regional geopolitical issues, including Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and explore opportunities for robust economic engagement in sectors such as energy, defence, aerospace and mining.
This visit will mark Minister Fidan’s first bilateral visit to Canada since his appointment in June 2023. Canada and Türkiye are NATO Allies and have longstanding diplomatic relations. Both countries work closely together on today’s most pressing global challenges through a number of multilateral forums, including the G20, NATO, the International Civil Aviation Organization, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). Türkiye is a country of broad commercial interest to Canada. In 2025, two-way merchandise trade was $4.3 billion. Canadian merchandise exports totalled $1.1 billion while imports from Türkiye added up to $3.2 billion.
