A parked vehicle heats up fast on a hot day, and officers will step in to free an animal in distress.

Richmond RCMP is asking drivers to leave their pets at home on warm days rather than bringing them along on errands.

The inside of a parked vehicle heats up quickly once the engine is off, even with the windows cracked and even on a day that does not feel especially hot. An animal left inside can move from discomfort to a medical emergency in the time it takes to run a single errand.

Officers respond to calls about animals left in parked vehicles through the summer. When an animal is found in distress, police are authorized to enter the vehicle to free it.

If you see an animal in distress in a hot vehicle, call 9-1-1. Be ready to give the location, a description of the vehicle including a license plate, and a description of the animal and its condition.

"A vehicle in the heat can turn dangerous in a few minutes. The simple rule is to never leave anyone in a parked vehicle who can’t get out on their own, whether that’s a child, an older adult, or a pet.” said Cpl. Frank Bryson, Richmond RCMP Media Relations Officer. “If you see a person or an animal in distress, call 9-1-1.”

When the weather is warm, the safest place for your pet is at home with access to water and shade. If your pet needs to come with you, plan stops where it can stay with you and out of an unattended vehicle.
