A demonstration by striking sanitation workers erupted into violence after police were called in to assist local administration with garbage clearance in Handiaya Bazaar, leaving several workers, including women, injured.

The clash occurred as police, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Satveer Singh Bains, attempted to facilitate alternative waste removal ordered in compliance with High Court directives. Tensions escalated into a lathi charge when workers resisted by throwing garbage at officers to prevent the clearance efforts.

Protesting workers condemned the police force, chanting slogans against the district administration and vowing to intensify their agitation until their workplace demands are met. In response to the unrest, police presence has been reinforced across sensitive areas in the city to maintain order.

The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) has taken notice of the incident. NCSK Vice-Chairman Hardeep Singh Gill has written to Punjab Chief Secretary K.A.P. Sinha, requesting an independent, transparent inquiry and a full report within seven days. Municipal and police officials noted that while the workers' demands remain under state government consideration, the administration was obligated to ensure city sanitation under judicial orders.
