Ravneet Singh Bittu has resigned from his post as India's minister of state for railways and food processing industries, with President Droupadi Murmu accepting the departure on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The move comes as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) prepares to go it alone in the upcoming 2027 Punjab assembly elections, ruling out an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal.

Bittu, the grandson of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, joined the BJP in 2024 after leaving the Congress party. Despite losing his 2024 parliamentary bid in Ludhiana, he was appointed to the Union Council of Ministers and later given a short-term nomination to the upper house representing Rajasthan.

With his cabinet resignation accepted, Bittu is expected to shift his complete focus to building the BJP's electoral footprint in his home state of Punjab ahead of the 2027 polls.

Bittu's family has a long association with Congress but in 2024, he joined the ruling BJP and unsuccessfully contested parliamentary elections from Ludhiana.

Bittu remained MP from Anandpur Sahib and Ludhiana from the Congress party.
