Supreme Court issues notice to Punjab CM over 2020 case

India's top court- The Supreme Court of India Thursday,  issued formal notices to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and several senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders in connection with a rioting case which was registered in 2020 in Chandigarh. The notice was issued  following an appeal by the Chandigarh Administration against a High Court .

A three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohana sought responses from Mann and fellow party leaders, including Harpal Singh Cheema, Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, Baljinder Kaur, and Aman Arora.

The appeal challenges a November 2025 ruling by Justice Tribhuvan Dahiya of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which quashed the initial police complaint, chargesheet, and all related legal proceedings against the politicians.

The top court had previously expressed hesitation to interfere during preliminary hearings earlier in July, remarking that political slogan-shouting is standard in a democracy and noting an absence of evidence that the leaders deliberately incited the crowd. However, the issuance of formal notices reopens legal scrutiny into the six-year-old matter.
