Man arrested for firing at a witness against MP Amritpal Singh
Police in Punjab have arrested a man following an early morning shooting involving a key witness in a high-profile case against jailed preacher and Member of Parliament Amritpal Singh. The authorities, however, dismissed online speculation that the incident was a targeted attack.
Rupnagar Senior Superintendent of Police Maninder Singh said an initial investigation shows the incident was triggered by a late-night road rage dispute rather than a conspiracy targeting the witness.
According to police, Mavi—a complainant and key witness in the 2023 Ajnala police station storming case involving Amritpal Singh—called authorities around 2:00 a.m. to report that someone was firing shots at him near Morinda. Police responded to the scene and arrested Jasbir Singh (also known as Kala), a resident of nearby Samroli village.
Police said an intoxicated Jasbir Singh got into a verbal altercation with Mavi over giving way on the road.
The suspect has been charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act at the Sadar Morinda police station.
