A day-long standoff between police and farmer unions ended in an agreement Wednesday evening after protesters agreed to suspend their demonstrations until Sept. 23 out of respect for the annual Baba Farid Mela festival.

The conflict began early Wednesday when police detained and house-arrested key leaders across the state to block a planned farmer assembly organized by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political). Among those targeted was convener Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who was confined to his home to prevent supporters from gathering.

Despite police barricades and security forces, Dallewal and a large group of supporters breached the perimeters around 6 p.m. and reached Sadiq Chowk, a central intersection in Faridkot, effectively blocking traffic.

Shortly after the blockade was established, local authorities intervened and offered to arrange a formal meeting between union representatives and senior state government officials to address their demands.

Dallewal criticized the government's tactics earlier in the day, accusing officials of using force to suppress democratic dissent and declaring that state action would not silence the movement.

Police officials stated the early-morning detentions were precautionary measures intended to maintain public order and prevent potential disruptions.

Farmer leaders accepted the government's proposal and agreed to pause all protest activities until the conclusion of the local festival.
