Punjab faces a growing power crisis after two units at the state’s largest private thermal power plant shut down, cutting energy output during high demand.

The Talwandi Sabo Power Limited (TSPL) plant in Mansa district, which has a total capacity of 1,980 megawatts (MW), is generating 597 MW from its single active unit. Plant management said one unit was closed for scheduled morning maintenance while the second suffered a technical fault. Officials expect both units to resume full operation by midnight, noting the facility has adequate coal reserves.

The shutdowns add to existing supply deficits across the state

State energy officials say local thermal output has dropped to 3,482 MW against a full capacity of 4,550 MW. With peak power demand reaching 16,270 MW, Punjab is importing 12,788 MW from the central grid to help cover the shortfall.
