Vancouver: Police say they have made another 258 arrests, including 25 repeat offenders, in an ongoing crackdown on chronic or violent shoplifters.

The arrests were made over a two-week period in mid-September, the latest phase of a project launched by the Vancouver Police Department last spring when 355 arrests were made across the city.

Police say they also worked with officers in Delta, Langley, Richmond and Burnaby, where an additional 82 shoplifting arrests were made.

Merchants have complained that repeat and increasingly violent shoplifters have frightened staff and customers and investigators say police must act decisively when people feel threatened because of crime. — The Canadian Press
