Chandigarh: Amritpal Singh, the chief of the outfit ‘Waris Punjab De’ and a pro-Khalistan leader, surrendered before the Moga police in Punjab this morning, following which he was arrested. Amritpal had been on the run for 37 days.

Now the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the highest body of Sikhs, has come forward in defense of Amritpal Singh. The SGPC has termed the action against Amritpal as unnecessary. The SGPC is preparing to take this matter to court, sources in the SGPC said.

Amritpal has been taken to Dibrugarh jail in Assam. Eight of his associates are already lodged there under the National Security Act. Amritpal had been on the run since March 18. He had escaped when the Punjab Police launched a major crackdown on members of his ‘Waris Punjab De’ outfit.

The SGPC will go to court for permission to take Amritpal’s family to Dibrugarh. SGPC members have met Amritpal’s family in Jallupur Khera. Of the total 10 people charged under the NSA, only one — Diljit Kalsi’s wife — a family member, has been able to meet him in Dibrugarh so far.

The rest of the families, including Amritpal’s family, will be taken to Dibrugarh. The SGPC has said that the action against Amritpal and others was uncalled for.
