The federal Cabinet is bypassing Parliament and is banning the importation of handguns.
Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino says the ban will take effect in two weeks.
The government tabled gun control legislation in May that includes a freeze on the importation, purchase, sale and transfer of handguns in Canada but it hasn’t yet passed yet.
The change will last until a permanent freeze is passed in Parliament and comes into force.
