Ottawa: Canada’s medical assistance in dying program won’t be expanded until at least March, 2027.
Health Minister Mark Holland and Justice Minister Arif Virani agree with a Commons committee’s assessment that Canada simply isn’t ready to expand eligibility to include people whose sole underlying condition is a mental illness.
The legislation Holland introduced this morning calls for another joint committee to study the issue within the next two years.
Parliament must now move quickly to pass the bill before the expansion automatically takes effect on March 17th.
