Shuswap: Those who lost homes and other buildings to wildfires within the Columbia Shuswap Regional District can now begin the rebuilding process.

District spokeswoman Tracy Hughes says a ban imposed in mid-September on issuing building permits has now been lifted.

However, she says geotechnical assessments that set off the ban have found that certain areas of the fire zone have higher risks than others, and that means each property will need a separate assessment.

The Bush Creek East fire destroyed over 170 homes and cabins and partially damaged 50 others within the regional district. — The Canadian Press
