Islamabad: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been arrested by Pakistani Rangers from outside the Islamabad High Court on Tuesday.

PTI’s lawyer Faisal Chaudhry confirmed his arrest. In the latest development, the Pakistan Army on Monday condemned Prime Minister Imran Khan for levelling “highly irresponsible and baseless” allegations against a serving ISI officer without any evidence. A day after this, he has been arrested.

With this, the war of words between the former prime minister and the powerful army started again. The strongly-worded statement by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the military’s media wing, also said Khan’s “fabricated and malicious allegations are extremely unfortunate, condemnable and unacceptable”.

“Over the past one year, it has been observed that officers of the Army and intelligence agencies are being targeted and cast aspersions on them for political purposes.

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had condemned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Khan for “defaming and threatening” the army and intelligence agencies.

Imran Khan had said at a rally on Saturday that Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) officer Major General Faisal Naseer was plotting to kill him.
