Ontario: Marc Garneau, a longtime politician and former astronaut, has announced his resignation from his seat in the House of Commons.

This Liberal MP from Quebec notified his resignation to his Quebec caucus colleagues on Wednesday before informing the entire Liberal Caucus of his resignation.

Speaking in Chamber for the last time, Garneau said it has been a privilege for him to serve the country. He has been an MP for more than 14 years and seven of that he was in the government.

He said that last year he had promised his family that he would quit politics after submitting his final report on it as the chair of the committee to diagnose deaths with medical help. He said that this report is of great importance to him and it was presented in mid-February.
