Toronto: In a landmark operation, Peel Regional Police have arrested 16 suspects and issued warrants for another 10 in connection with a sophisticated auto theft ring. Dubbed Project Odyssey, the investigation, which began in October 2023, has resulted in the seizure of 369 stolen vehicles valued at $33.2 million. These vehicles were intended for foreign markets, primarily the UAE and Oman. Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah hailed the operation as Peel’s most significant auto theft investigation to date. Authorities revealed that 14 of the 26 suspects were already out on bail for similar offenses. The investigation exposed a local trucking company allegedly complicit in transporting the stolen vehicles to the Port of Montreal. Despite these arrests, police emphasize the ongoing threat of auto theft in the region, with over 3,000 stolen cars recovered in Peel last year alone.
