Attempted Sacrilege Reported at Golden Temple Complex; Suspect in Police Custody
A man was taken into police custody after allegedly attempting an act of sacrilege at a gurdwara within the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar late Wednesday night.
The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. at Gurdwara Baba Gurbakhsh Singh, located behind Akal Takht Sahib, where an Akhand Path (continuous recitation of Sikh scripture) was underway.
According to officials of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the man entered the gurdwara, circumambulated the holy scripture and then allegedly attempted to pick up a ceremonial kirpan placed nearby. Worshippers present at the site intervened and restrained him before handing him over to police.
SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami condemned the incident and called for a thorough investigation.
Amritsar Sahib police launched an investigation into the incident.
