BRICS summit: Bangladesh PM likely not to visit India before the summit

The likelihood of Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visiting India before the upcoming BRICS summit is "very slim," according to a senior diplomatic official in Dhaka.

Humayun Kabir, foreign affairs adviser to Prime Minister Rahman, stated that high-level talks between the two neighboring nations should not be rushed without proper groundwork. Speaking in an interview with the state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) news portal, Kabir emphasized that a visit depends on New Delhi creating a "conducive environment" and extending a "respectful invitation" based on mutual consensus.

The remarks address ongoing uncertainty surrounding whether the Bangladeshi leader will travel to New Delhi for the BRICS outreach session scheduled for Sept. 12-13. Kabir noted that Bangladesh remains open to participating if both countries can reach a consensus on key bilateral issues, maintaining that any diplomatic movement will prioritize national interests.
