Chandigarh: A Punjab Police personnel slapped a woman protesting over land acquisition in Bhamdi village at Gurdaspur.

The video of the incident has gone viral on the social media on Thursday.

Taking cognizance of the video, the top officials shifted the accused police personnel to the Police line and initiated a departmental inquiry against him.

According to the information received, the police team came to the village to acquire land for the Delhi Katra National Highway. However, farmers opposed the administration and police teams to acquire the land.

The police started evacuating the protesting farmers from the site and in the meantime, a cop slapped the woman and the incident got recorded.

Apart from this, police personnel are also being accused of dragging farmer leaders and removing their turbans. Due to this, the atmosphere is tense in many areas of the state and farmers unions announced to launch a massive protests against the Punjab government.

Meanwhile, seeking compensation for the land acquired under the Bharat Mala project, farmers blocked railway tracks across Punjab from 1 pm today to protest against the lathi charge. They blocked railway tracks at different places including in Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Ferozepur, Bathinda, Amritsar, Patiala, Ropar and some others to lodge their protest.
